TechCruch did an article on web services that he couldn’t live without. So I’m going to do my own. Granted I did one earlier, but I feel it’s time to update it with what I’m currently using. I’m going to break this down into articles on each service instead of doing a long article cause otherwise I won’t ever get it done.

My GrandCentral phone number is the only one I’m giving out these days. And I’m using the heck out of the features these days while I’m talking to nursing recruiters. If someone annoys me too much I set their contact # to go straight to voicemail. Going to bed during the day. I enable temporary settings for all calls to go to voicemail. If I had more than one phone, for example a home and an office phone I could set contacts I deal with on the job to only ring my office phone and family to only ring on my home phone. Once I move to Georgia I’ll have it set to also ring the house phone as well as my cell phone. And if I move or change jobs I just delete the old phone number and add the new one. It’s now ringing the new number and I don’t have to even tell anyone. Handy since I’m considering traveling. If I wanted to I could pick up the phone and press a # to let the message go to voicemail, but also listen in to the voicemail as it’s being recorded. Also I love that when I look up a contact in the address book all of the archived voicemail messages from that person is there as well. Get phone spammers? You can mark a phone # as a phone spammer and choose whether they go straight to voicemail or choose that they get a # not in service message.
Drawbacks: 1.) After you answer the phone, you have to press 1 to speak to the person calling. 2.) It’s still in beta so you have to get an invitation to join. I have a few left if you seriously want one.
