Today’s adventures in FODMAP takes me to Wendy’s to explore their menu.
Ok:

  • Apple Pecan Salad – no apples
  • Asian Cashew Chicken Salad
  • Baked Potato
  • BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad – may need to avoid ranch dressing because of lactose
  • Applewood Bacon
  • Hamburger Patty
  • Ultimate Chicken Grill Fillet
  • Water

Not wise:

  • Dressings containing High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Frosty – lactose and HFCS
  • Sodas – HFCS
  • Buns – gluten
  • Milk – lactose
  • BBQ Nuggets Sauce – HFCS
  • Honey Mustard Sauce – HFCS
  • Sweet and Sour Nuggets Sauce – HFCS

Hi, Tanya! I have just recently within the past month been diagnosed with IBS and started trying out the FODMAP diet. Are you working with a dietician or are you going it alone?

Hi, I have been informally working with a dietician, but mostly trial and error. What I mean is.. I work in a hospital environment (I am a nurse) and the dietician I know and have discussed this with only sees hospital inpatients and not private patients. Low FODMAP hasn’t pervaded the southern US as a treatment here, so the both of us are learning about the diet.
The curious thing was I was somewhat following the diet without knowing about it (I had the links to apples & a lot of the fruits and veggies that trigger my IBS), though I hadn’t gone gluten-free and was still consuming High Fructose Corn Syrup drinks. So I just went out and bought gluten-free bread/crackers & sodas with Sucrose instead of Fructose and I carry on without many issues.

Same here! I’ve had it for 10 years and just now realizing this is the other piece of the puzzle to my gut distress. I also have Ulcerative Colitis. My first diagnosis with UC was at age 5 and had it rear it’s ugly head again in 2004. After getting on different medication in 2006 the UC got under control pretty much but I couldn’t figure out why I was still having a lot of symptoms. Gradually, I found out certain foods bothered me like onions and garilic, peas, artichokes, and asparagus which I just found out is one of the suspects on high FODMAP list.
Now, I’ve eliminated gluten from my diet. I went on a gluten free diet a few years ago. I felt at first it helped and then it didn’t help. I’m guessing I wasn’t addressing the whole issue yet. Still having problems. Trying to get a lot of fiber and drink lots of water. It is so frustrating.

Luckily I’ve not had to deal with Ulcerative Colitis. My first scope, my physician thought I had it, but pathology came back negative for it. It is hard putting together the pieces to reach all the details with FODMAP.
