You’ll probably have noticed that the zone you’ve been questing in is getting easier than when you started. Mobs are now turning grey & not giving you xp. So your question is what’s next? Where do I go from here. Unless you’re following TourGuide or are leveling Alts you may not know. So the things you can do at level 30? I’ll try to cover through level 40 here.
Zones for questing
Alterac Mountains (30-40)- In the Eastern Kingdoms, former home of Alterac & Dalaran (Human kingdoms). Alterac was destroyed & Dalaran was ported to Northrend. The mountains are overrun by ogres & the town of Strahnbad has been taken over by the roguish Syndicate. There is no flight path in this area. For the Alliance most quests will be given in Southshore in the Hillsbrad Foothills. For the Horde most quests will be given in Tauren Mill also in the Hillsbrad Foothills. The entrance to Alterac Valley a level 40+ PvP battleground instance is also here. Most people queue with the city battle masters or the battleground finder now so few trek out here for the instance. On PvP servers Horde usually dominate this area, but the worst you should face on a normal or RP style server is your quest givers slaughtered (unless you decide to try to fight them & get flagged).
Desolace (30-40)- In Kalimdor, a desert that was a former settlement of Highbourne elves. Now the zone is overrun with centaurs & contains a Kodo graveyard. Flight points & quest hubs can be found at Shadow Prey Village for the Horde & Nijel’s Point for the Alliance. The level 40-58 instance of Maraudon is located in Desolace.
Stranglethorn Vale (30-45)- In the Eastern Kingdoms, a jungle zone that was the former home of the Gurubashi Empire. Home to several fun areas. The Gurubashi Arena has pvp. Booty Bay has the goblins of the Steamwheedle Cartel. Booty Bay is also known as the home of the weekly Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza. The zeppelin from Orgimmar goes to the Grom’gol Base Camp. A neutral boat runs from Rachet in the Barrens to Booty Bay. The neutral auction house (which is the only way to move items from Horde to Alliance is located in Booty Bay (also branches in Gadgetstan & Everlook but Booty Bay’s easier to get to). While the Grom’gol Base Camp serves as a quest hub for the Horde, the Rebel Camp in northern Strangelthorn is an Alliance quest hub. Hemet Nesingwary’s camp is located in mid Stranglethorn giving a notorious quest line that is revisited in Outlands & Northrend. At this stage the rewards from this quest line is excellent Rogue, Hunter or Feral Druid gear and will last you many levels. On most PvP servers however people avoid this area for questing due to the high number of higher level players in the zone & it is notorious for PvP “ganking” lower level characters (1 shot killing).
Dustwallow Marsh (35-45) – In central Kalimdor, home to Lady Jania Proudmoore ruler of the Alliance affiliated Theramore. Mages will learn to portal to Theramore. You may arrive here via boat from Methnil Harbor in the Wetlands. This is a swampland. Horde quest hub is Brackenwall Village & Alliance is Theramore while there is a neutral goblin town named Mudsproket which also has it’s on flight point.
Swamp of Sorrows (35-45)- In Eastern Kingdoms, a swamp land inhabited by swamp creatures, trolls & green. A Horde settlement, Stonard is there along with a horde flight point. However the closest Alliance ones are Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands or Darkshire in Duskwood. There is the neutral Harborage which serves as a quest hub for either faction. For Alliance I’d say this was a poor questing zone due to the lack of easy access & the low number of accessible quests. Is also home to the Sunken Temple a level 50-56 dungeon.
Instances
Scarlet Monastery (32-35)- a stronghold of the Scarlet Crusade in Tirisfal Glades. It is divided into 4 wings: Graveyard (designed for levels 28-33), Library (32-36), Armory (35-37), and Cathedral (36-41). All four wings will allow a player entry as long as you are level 20 or greater. This is a very popular dungeon because of the large number of lower level blue items that drop. My warlock wore the helm from the Library until she reached the Outlands. You can get xp in here up to Level 45.
Razorfen Downs (34-37)- burial grounds of the quilboar located in the Barrens. Be careful wiping here because running back to your body is a maze.
Uldaman (37-40) – old earthen complex overrun by Dark Iron Dwarfs & Troggs in the Badlands. A run back from a graveyard here can be long & confusing. Minimum level for entry is 30.
Pvp
Warsong Gulch (10+)- located between the Barren & Ashenvale, the Warsong Outriders (Orc faction) & Silverwing Sentinels (Night elf faction) fight each other. It is a 10 vs. 10 “capture the flag” scenario with a 25 minute game timer. Brackets are separated by levels 10-19, 20-29, etc. with level 80 having it’s own bracket.
Arathi Basin (20+)- located in the Arathi Highlands, the Forsaken Defilers (Undead faction) & the League of Arathor (Human faction). This is a 15 vs. 15 game of capture the resource nodes. There are 5 resouce nodes if your team holds more nodes you accrue resources quicker. First side to reach 1600 resources wins. It is bracketed the same as Warsong Gulch.
