We were talking at work about receiving patients without getting report. I remember this happening twice to me.
1)
In Dickson, ER had called us for a bed assignment, they had given us Name, Age, MD & Diagnosis at that point. The charge nurse of the ER started bringing the patient through the doors of the unit. She stopped halfway in the doors and looked at us and said, “I forgot to call report.” with a really incredulous look on her face.
2)
In Johnson City, I was getting a patient at around 5 am (read admission close to change of shift which annoys me to no end). I’ve got a name, diagnosis, age & admitting doc. AND THAT’S IT. I keep waiting for report and I’m finishing up closing out my other patients for the morning. I look up and the paramedics are rolling down the hallway with the patient. I hadn’t gotten report. I was so mad I was almost seeing red. I got him transferred over, hooked up. Did the history and assessment as fast as I could. Called doc to let them know he was here. I get paged for the phone. It’s the transferring hospital to give report. I pick it up and the nurse starts the report with “I’ve got a XX year old male….” I just came back with. “NO, I’ve got Mr. So & So here already.” I really regret now being so nasty with him, but didn’t at the time. I was just fuming.
